Season 2, Episode 3: Brookgreen Gardens
Frank visits a Botanical Gardens with beautiful sculptures and a grim past.
I reached out to some friends with historical interests for suggestions for my Carolina’s trip. I had never visited the area (only drove through), and searching through online resources can only return so much. When Brookgreen Gardens was suggested, I immediately looked it up.
Talk about a location that had more to offer than previously thought! I just thought it was going to be a botanical gardens that had some history, but between seeing this massive location (complete with not only foliage but sculptures and a zoo), and talking with not one, but two fascinating interviewees, I was enraptured by this location. (Just a note…this episode only has the first interview with Teresa Skinner. I really felt like Ron Daise told a uniquely different story and both needed to be both given their own episodes). Word to the wise folks, if you have friends who are interested in the same things as you, definitely take their advice when traveling, because I might have looked over this location if it had not been for the advice I received. And trust me, I am ecstatic I didn’t miss this place. Just goes to show that sometimes there more history than it would seem at first glance.
