Episode 5: Marketplace at Fell's Point
While the North Market sits empty, the rest of Fell's Point is beautiful. What happened? In this fifth episode of this season of History at Risk, Dee studies the history of the Marketplace at Fell's Point project which inspired the community with visions of the North Market with its second floor rebuilt. What happened to that project?
I had a lot of questions today on these markets, and it all seems like a big mystery as to what’s going to happen next. Luckily for me I’ve got a few more details out of the experts. But unluckily for me, Frank says he’ll be back, so I’ll just be looking forward to another ridiculous text message tomorrow.
The Marketplace at Fell's Point real estate development was the inspiration for this season of History at Risk. Beginning in 2006, Dave Holmes and Dan Winner planned to redevelop the blocks around the North Market and restore the Market's iconic 2nd floor. Inspired by the vision of the Market restoration, the community supported them enthusiastically. The project was almost derailed by the 2008 recession, but eventually all of it was completed -- except the renovation of the Market itself.
